Story Circle at Proctors                                                                           Kate Dudding and Joe Doolittle   6-23-2011

Word Plays: Storytelling at Proctors

Contemporary and Traditional Stories Told by Solo Performers              (solo performer is the theatre term for storyteller)

Aimed at boomers and younger audiences, only one event per month, $16 per ticket

Each program in this series will include a 50/50 mix of contemporary and traditional stories (with brief intros on how that this story is meaningful today) with 1-4 storytellers, for a total of up to 100 minutes of stories, not including the intermission.

Each program has a one/two word topic that definitely distinguishing us from kid storytelling, such as:

Passion

Epiphany

Flashback

Oh Sh*t!

Risk

Rebellion

Excitement

Infatuation

Circles

Obsession

Zeal

Compassion

Elation

Community

Salvation

Fighting Power

Perfection

Strangers

Drunk – With Love, Power, Life

The topics should be entrancing enough to appeal to people who have never been to storytelling. A vague title such as “Spring into Spring with Stories” does not draw new people to our events.

The contemporary stories are important – they are the easiest stories for new audiences to relate to – that’s what we’ve learned from Tellabration. Having all the stories relate to a specific topic is also important – that’s what theatre audiences expect, and we are trying to lure theatre audience members to our shows.

Business Model

Proctors is charging us $100 (regularly $200) to rent The Gallery at Proctors (seats 100) plus $140 for a house manager/sound tech plus $2 per ticket. Proctors will handle the box office, promote Word Plays via their web site and brochures, as well as set up the chairs and give us a mic and a stage.  Their art designer has also designed a logo for Story Circle at Proctors.

An example based on 50 tickets at $16 = $800

$340 to Proctors ($100 + $140 + $2 per ticket)

$322 to tellers (70% of net profits ($460) )

$46 to Kate and Joe (10 %)  or  5% to Kate (for publicity activities) and 5% to emcee

$92 to Story Circle at Proctors (20% for postcards, flyers, advertising)

We need to staff these programs by July 20 in order to be in Proctors next big publicity release.

FYI the First Season (2008) consisted of: Gusto; Procrastination; Fear; Inappropriate Behavior;  Naked Hearts.

The Second Season (2008-2009) consisted of: Gotcha!  Dive!  Surprise!  Detours;  Just Deserts;  Satisfaction.

The Third Season (2009-2010) consisted of: Adirondack Character(s), Not-in-Kansas, Oh Sh*t, Hunger, Shenanigans, Bumps in the Road

The Fourth Season (2010-2011) consisted of: Enthusiasm!, The Dark, Savor, Against the Odds, Tales and Tails with a Twist

If you want to participate in this fifth season, please pick one or more topics that interest you and that fit your repertoire. Select and time stories from your repertoire that fit each topic.

1.                          You may apply by yourself, with 30-100 minutes of stories per topic. Kate and Joe will match you up with other tellers to make a 100 minute program.

2.      You may also apply with 1-3 other tellers using the entire 100 minutes (plus or minus 10 minutes) for a complete program using one of the topics above.

3.      You may also apply with 1-3 other tellers using the entire 100 minutes (plus or minus 10 minutes) for a complete program using a topic of your choice (which has an edgy adult feel similar to the topics above).

4.      We are still trying to develop an audience for Word Plays while also giving performance opportunities to Story Circle members. So those who have told in both the first and second season will only be selected to tell in this third season after the other tellers who apply have been accommodated OR if these tellers typically draw a large crowd.

For each topic, please fill in the table below.
